Miles Robinson’s late goal grants the USMNT Gold Cup glory

Las Vegas, NV- The USMNT faced off against the Mexico National team in an exciting Gold Cup Final, where the USMNT came out triumphant.

Both teams come from suffering in their respective semifinal matchups. The US struggled to bead Qatar, and thanks to a late Gyasi Zardes goal, the Stars and Stripes sealed their spot in the final. Mexico suffered the same fate thanks to a very late goal by Hector Herrera as they also secured their place in the final.

The first half was very exciting as both teams sought to create chances to get in behind the ball. Both the US and Mexico had clear-cut chances to open up the score but were unlucky not to put it away.

In the 26th minute of the first half, after a giveaway from Edson Alvarez, Lletget salvaged the ball and passed it to Arriola, whose shot hit the post and denied the US to open up the scoring.

Both teams in the second half had chances to score again, but both teams were unable to score. Players to notate that brought their A-game were Kellyn Acosta, Matt Turner, and Miles Robinson.

With the 90 minutes coming up and still scoreless, we had the privilege to watch another 30 minutes of action. Both teams, yet again, were critical in their passing to avoid any mistakes.

It wasn’t until a set piece in the 117th minute where Kellyn Acosta set up a beautiful cross inside the box, and Atlanta United defender Miles Robinson headed into the back of the net.

The US were crowned a seventh time for this Gold Cup since their last championship win in 2017. A marvelous performance from all the players helped seal the win today. Matt Turner had himself an outstanding performance denying the Mexican opposition clear-cut chances on goal.

The next time these two sides will meet will be at the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers, with a date to yet be determined. In the meantime, the USMNT is two for two in CONCACAF Finals, having to beat Mexico last June in the CONCACAF Nations League Final.

The USMNT extends their unbeaten streak to nine games ahead of their clash against El Salvador in the World Cup Qualifiers.
