Kansas City, MO- FC Dallas went on the road to face Sporting Kansas City, where FCD could pick up their first win on the road of the season.

Luchi Gonzalez started Schön, Pepi, Ferreira, and Pomykal to lead the way for a win. Their youthfulness and hunger to win games would clearly show on Saturday’s win.

In the opening minutes of the game, Paxton Pomykal tried an effort from long range and managed to get his shot into the back of the net to open up the score. Pomykal’s goal was the first goal on the road for FCD this season.

FC Dallas’ Paxton Pomykal spoke on his sides attacking front:

“I felt like the combinations were very good today. I felt the final service was still lacking a little bit… There’s still definitely room for improvement game by game, that we’re hitting more in sync and comfortable with each other in the final third. We scored two goals today that you might not score on a different night, but I felt like we had other opportunities that might have been better chances in front of goal.”

FC Dallas seemed to be pushed back for most of the first half, where we saw Sporting Kansas City move their lines up to tie the game. FC Dallas has had positive encounters facing Kansas on the road, given that the last time they lost was in 2018.

In the second half of the match, FCD would strike again early; this time, Jesus Ferreira would attempt a long-range effort that made into the back of the net to extend his side’s lead.

The team conceded a goal late in the second half when Sporting Kansas forward Johnny Russell scored five minutes left on the clock. His goal was not enough to tie the game.

FC Dallas was very dominating throughout the game, with their youthful players upfront. They all managed to create chance after chance on the Kansas defense. Their chances totaled up to 20 shots created, but only four were able to reach the target, and two of those shots on target turned into goals.

Head coach Luchi Gonzales gave his thoughts of Saturday’s performance:

“Honestly, just very proud of the 90-minute performance. It was back-and-forth, not perfect obviously, with a lot of mistakes. But the mentality I thought was good. They were fierce, they played with courage with the ball. There was mobility, there were combinations, the goals were great examples of taking chances and putting them on frame.”

Jesús Ferreira also commented on how the team is keeping that momentum and how they are applying it into the games:

“I think last week was a good step in the right direction of where we want to go and the type of game we want to play. Today we showed that we are keeping the momentum.”

Paxton Pomykal and Jesús Ferreira score their first goals of the 2021 season. FC Dallas faces Seattle Sounders FC at Lumen Field on Wednesday, August 4, before returning to Toyota Stadium, where they’ll face Austin FC for the first time on Saturday, August 7.
