Facing an Early Exit for Messi and Argentina

The stage was right for an Argentina squad to forget the tied game against Iceland this past Saturday.

An impressive display by all of the Croatians made it difficult for Argentina throughout the whole game. Making it very difficult for even Lionel Messi to get a touch on the ball.

Everything was set for Argentina to beat Croatia and have things go back to normal. Croatia had other plans. Successfully beating Nigeria 1-0 they went on to beat the 2014 World Cup finalists 3-0.

Croatia opened up the score with a big mistake from Willy Caballero and a superb finish by Rebic in the 53rd minute. Luka Modric went on to score an amazing goal from outside the 18yd line from goal. This made it very difficult for Argentina as they saw themselves down 2-0 in the 80th minute. Ivan Rakitic completed the Croatian dominance by scoring a third goal for Croatia in the 90th minute, sealing the victory 3-0.

Luka Modric had a say with TV Pública Argentina ”Messi is an exceptional player, but he can’t do it all by himself. In football you need help.”

There’s still light at the end of this tunnel for Argentina but they need help from Nigeria. There are three ways that Argentina can still qualify for the round of 16. According to ESPN:

1- IF ICELAND WIN: They need a win vs Nigeria, an Iceland loss vs Croatia and to have a better goal differential than Iceland.

2- IF NIGERIA AND ICELAND DRAW: They need a win vs Nigeria and an Iceland draw/loss vs Croatia.

3- IF NIGERIA WIN: They need a win vs Nigeria and to have a better goal differential than Iceland if they win their final game vs Croatia.

Let’s hope the best for Messi and co. As their next game is against Nigeria. Would be pretty upsetting to see them leave the World Cup in the beginning stages.
