Just as early today in the France vs Australia game, Argentina would not leave very convincing against Iceland.
In the first half we saw a very calm Argentina squad passing the ball from side to side looking for a gap in the Icelandic defense, a goal came with a good effort at the 19th minute from El Kun Aguero scoring his first goal in WC history. Everything seemed like this would be the start of a dominant Argentina.
Alfred Finnbogason had other plans as he managed to get a rebound from a sloppy rejection from Willy Caballero and send it to the back of the net to score Iceland’s first-ever World Cup goal. Iceland made it very difficult for the Argentines. Lionel Messi always was followed by at least two defenders, making it hard for La Pulga to do any damage. Both teams would end the first half 1-1.
The second half was no different as Iceland remained with their defensive tactics not making much the effort to score a second goal. A missed PK in the 64th minute by Messi was just enough for the Iceland side to clinch their first-ever point in the World Cup.
Continuous efforts from Messi and company were just not enough to get through the Iceland defense.
